Jon Stewart focused on the media panic surrounding the hantavirus outbreak on the latest episode of The Daily Show. After playing a series of clips from the news media discussing the “deadly virus,” Stewart urged viewers not to buy into the hype that this is the next Covid pandemic.

The host, clad in a hazmat suit, responded, “What? Another pandemic? Are we going to have to start washing our hands again or freaking the fuck out in a Target?”

After explaining the differences between the two diseases, he said, “The point is, some people may get pretty sick, but forget Covid. This ain’t no pandemic. Hell, this hantavirus, it’s not even in monkeypox territory. But I guess reality don’t sell papers.”

Stewart commented how the news media has been overly panicked about the potential for an outbreak. “Expert upon expert, scientist upon scientist, very transparently explained why this illness, while a serious illness, is a low-level public health threat,” he recounted. “Their words went a long way to easing the concerns of a curious public. And Lord knows the news can’t let that happen.”

Passengers on the infected cruise ship, the MV Hondius, disembarked over the weekend and were returned to their home countries, where they would be isolated. The coverage of the disembarkation was particuarly chaotic, causing Stewart to quip, “The news experts say ‘Stay calm,’ but the news media says, ‘No, I believe we prefer panic.'”

Stewart accused reporters of treating it “like the OJ case” and noted that the media using drones to take images of passengers getting off a bus was a completely waste of resources. “Spectacular,” he said. “Such good use of drones. Ukraine uses theirs to defeat Russia, but good on you.”

The host concluded his monologue by commenting that “it’s like they’re all trying to recapture that pandemic ratings magic.” He added, “This is spreading like—what’s something that doesn’t spread? Cold butter? The legs of a prude? So it’s fine. It’s not a thing. Go about your lives!”

Pete Davidson Delivers Vicious Joke About Kanye West Feud at Kevin Hart Roast

Kevin Hart subjected himself to one of comedy’s most hallowed and excruciating traditions last night, the roast. The stand-up and movie star was inundated with jokes of all kinds — though mostly about his stature — at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on Sunday, with the special now available on Netflix. But it was arguably Pete Davidson who stole the show with one of the night’s most vicious jokes, technically directed at controversial comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, but also Charlie Kirk and Kanye West.

Davidson leaned into Hinchcliffe, who hosts the popular Kill Tony stand-up show and enjoyed a brief surge of notoriety after he made offensive jokes about Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans at a Donald Trump rally weeks before the 2024 election. Davidson cracked that Hinchcliffe looked like “both a child molester and the doll they gave the child to show where he touched them,” then even more brutally joked, “Tony reminds me of Charlie Kirk, in that he’s definitely been on camera letting a guy unload in his throat.”

The Oasis Reunion Documentary Liam Gallagher Said They Wouldn’t Make Sets Release Date

We’ve come a long way from Liam Gallagher outright denying plans to make a documentary about Oasislong-awaited reunion. In 2024, the musician wrote on X, “There’s been enough said about this band it’s time to get Rocking and Rolling not yapping and scrapping.” As it turns out, they made time for all of it: Steven Knight’s currently untitled Oasis documentary will officially be released in select theaters on Sept. 11.

“I genuinely cannot wait for the world to see this film,” Knight said in a statement. “I believe it captures the spirit and emotion of a global cultural moment and does justice to the wit and genius of two exceptional people. I wanted to tell the story of the brothers and the band, but just as important, the story of the fans whose lives the music has touched and sometimes changed forever. It is also the story of how music and songwriting can unite generations, cultures, countries and in a time of spite and division, give us all some reason to hope.”

It Ends With Legal Fees: The Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni Legal Battle Isn’t Actually Over

Even though Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni reached a settlement in their legal dispute over alleged sexual misconduct on the set of It Ends With Us and an alleged smear campaign Baldoni led after its release, it hasn’t ended quite yet. Lively still wants Baldoni to pay her attorneys’ fees for the countersuit he filed against her that a judge dismissed.

Because both parties reached the settlement “with prejudice,” meaning Lively cannot refile the same suit against Baldoni, it left the door open to collect compensation for what Lively had to pay her lawyers for their time. She can also seek punitive damages (an amount of money as punishment for effectively wasting her lawyers’ time with a suit a judge deemed meritless) and treble damages, which would award her three times the amount of what a jury would determine to be actual or compensatory damages.

Billie Eilish Gets Raw in 3D for ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ Concert Film

Billie Eilish’s excellent new concert movie Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) is the rare film that’s directed by two Oscar winners: James Cameron and Eilish herself. These two make an unusual pair, coming from two totally different worlds — the man who directed Titanic and the woman who wrote “Lunch.” (She’s won Best Song twice, for the Barbie song you remember and a James Bond theme you don’t.) It’s a 3D film, for that extra-immersive experience. But onscreen, as onstage, there’s nobody else on earth like Billie Eilish.

Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) is her third concert film, after the animation-heavy 2021 Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles and the 2023 Live at the O2. But despite the 3D effects, it ends up as a straight-ahead presentation of a no-frills stage show. Like the tour, it all comes down to Eilish and the power of her deeply personal songs. It’s no behind-the-scenes doc of wacky backstage shenanigans. Nothing distracts from the emotional intimacy of Eilish onstage, belting “The Greatest” or “Happier Than Ever,” on an artistic peak.
