FKA Twigs is set to star in a biopic about Josephine Baker, the iconic American-born entertainer who rose to fame in Paris in the roaring 1920s.

The news was announced on Monday, ahead of this week’s Cannes Film Festival. French filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré — of the coming-of-age drama Cuties — will serve as the director with filming scheduled for the fall.

“I cannot wait to embody Josephine Baker, bringing her fight, her love, her losses, her talent, and her heroism to the big screen,” the Grammy-winning artist said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “She lives on in our hearts as a visionary, ground-breaking woman whose story is as powerful as it is relevant today.”

It’s the latest acting role for Twigs to take on. While juggling her music career, in which she picked up her first Grammy award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Eusexua, she has steadily pursued silver screen gigs. She previously starred in Honey Boy, The Carpenter’s Son, and most recently, the A24 thriller Mother Mary alongside Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.

Talk of the Josephine Baker project — which is being done with the blessing of her sons — has been circling since last May. Baker is an iconic figure of the Jazz Age, famed for her doe eyes, striking bob and dancing style.

Originally born Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1906, Baker performed in Vaudeville shows before moving to Paris in 1925. Her routine, Danse Sauvage, in which she performed in a banana skirt, helped catapult her to fame.

In 1927, Baker became the first Black woman to star in a major feature film in Siren of the Tropics. Beyond entertainment, Baker became an activist, joining the French Resistance during World War II and the U.S. civil rights movement in the 1960s. Baker died aged 68 in April 1975.

It Ends With Legal Fees: The Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni Legal Battle Isn’t Actually Over

Even though Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni reached a settlement in their legal dispute over alleged sexual misconduct on the set of It Ends With Us and an alleged smear campaign Baldoni led after its release, it hasn’t ended quite yet. Lively still wants Baldoni to pay her attorneys’ fees for the countersuit he filed against her that a judge dismissed.

Because both parties reached the settlement “with prejudice,” meaning Lively cannot refile the same suit against Baldoni, it left the door open to collect compensation for what Lively had to pay her lawyers for their time. She can also seek punitive damages (an amount of money as punishment for effectively wasting her lawyers’ time with a suit a judge deemed meritless) and treble damages, which would award her three times the amount of what a jury would determine to be actual or compensatory damages.

Billie Eilish Gets Raw in 3D for ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft’ Concert Film

Billie Eilish’s excellent new concert movie Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) is the rare film that’s directed by two Oscar winners: James Cameron and Eilish herself. These two make an unusual pair, coming from two totally different worlds — the man who directed Titanic and the woman who wrote “Lunch.” (She’s won Best Song twice, for the Barbie song you remember and a James Bond theme you don’t.) It’s a 3D film, for that extra-immersive experience. But onscreen, as onstage, there’s nobody else on earth like Billie Eilish.

Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) is her third concert film, after the animation-heavy 2021 Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles and the 2023 Live at the O2. But despite the 3D effects, it ends up as a straight-ahead presentation of a no-frills stage show. Like the tour, it all comes down to Eilish and the power of her deeply personal songs. It’s no behind-the-scenes doc of wacky backstage shenanigans. Nothing distracts from the emotional intimacy of Eilish onstage, belting “The Greatest” or “Happier Than Ever,” on an artistic peak.

Actress Sues James Cameron and Disney for Stealing Her Likeness for ‘Avatar’ Character

An actress has accused James Cameron and Disney for stealing her likeness to create an Avatar character without her knowledge and consent.

Indigenous actress and activist Q’orianka Kilcher, who portrayed Pocahontas in Terrence Malick’s The New World when she was just 14, filed a lawsuit in California on Tuesday. The complaint alleges that Cameron extracted and replicated Kilcher’s facial features from a published photograph in The Los Angeles Times, using it as the basis of the character Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña in all three Avatar films.

Details of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s ‘It Ends With Us’ Settlement Are Now Public

Blake Lively‘s attorneys have described her settlement with Justin Baldoni over It Ends With Us a “resounding victory,” as the parties submitted paperwork withdrawing the case on Thursday morning.

The agreement was reached Monday, nearly a year and a half after Lively sued Baldoni for the alleged sexual harassment she experienced while filming the domestic violence movie and the alleged smear campaign launched against her during the film’s press tour in summer 2024.
