It’s only been a few days since Ariana Grande dropped her highly-praised seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, and the singer is already giving her fans more to listen to. After teasing an expanded edition of the album over the weekend, Grande followed through on her promise and released the “Slightly Deluxe” version with four additional tracks.
These include her previously-shared duet with Mariah Carey on the single “Yes, and?” and a collaboration with Troye Sivan on “Supernatural.” It also boasts an acoustic version of “Imperfect For You” and an a capella recording of “True Story.”
Grande released Eternal Sunshine on Friday, and Rolling Stone dubbed it an “Instant Classic.”
“Grande’s latest is a gorgeously exposed journey to the end of her world — or at least what she believes to be the end. It’s a divorce album that goes through all the stages of grief, and the singer navigates a new beginning with some of the most honest and inventive songs of her career so far,” Rolling Stone‘s Brittany Spanos wrote. “By the end of the album, Grande comes as close as anyone possibly can to answering her question from the start of the album. But she, like everyone else, owns up to the fact that it’s a fool’s errand to understand how love works.”
The singer celebrated her new album on Saturday as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Along with performing “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” and “Imperfect for You,” Grande also appeared in several skits.
But not all the moments from the weekend were positive. After fans began dissecting the lyrics in her new songs, Grande issued a social media plea to those who were misinterpreting the “intention behind the music” and sending hateful messages to those they believed the tracks to be about. (The album was written in the aftermath of her divorce from Dalton Gomez and subsequent relationship with her Wicked co-star, Ethan Slater.)
“Hi. I just wanted to say anyone that is sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is absolutely doing the polar opposite of what I would ever encourage (and is also entirely misinterpreting the intention behind the music)… I ask that you please do not,” she wrote in her Instagram Stories on Saturday.
“It is not how to support me. It is the opposite,” she continued. “Although this album captures a lot of painful moments, it also is woven together with a through line of deep, sincere love. If you cannot hear that, please listen more closely. Thank you.”
