George and Amal Clooney have evacuated their home in France amid the ongoing wildfires. The couple and their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, currently live in the town of Brignoles in southeastern France, one of multiple regions in Europe where fires are spreading.
The Clooneys confirmed their evacuation in a letter to Brignoles mayor Didier Brémond. “At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” they wrote, according to People. “As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasize two things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there.”
Last year, Clooney told Esquire that he keeps his primary residence in France, although he owns several other properties around the world. The family received French citizenship in December. The actor described his preference for the country to Esquire, especially when it came to raising his kids and avoiding the worst trappings of fame.
“I was worried about raising our kids in L. A., in the culture of Hollywood,” he said. “I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France — they kind of don’t give a shit about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

Multiple wildfires are burning throughout Europe, including in France, England, Spain, and Greece, where three firefighters have died. Spain has seen approximately 63,000 people evacuated from their homes, according to CNN, while around 224,000 people have been evacuated in the French region of Gironde. Some were allowed back home this week, but not all of the fires are under control at present.
Earlier this week, French president Emmanuel Macron said, “We must understand that we are facing a completely unprecedented wildfire. The situation we are dealing with today is the most severe we have ever recorded, the toughest since the Second World War. More than 160,000 hectares have already burned, and the season is far from over.”
