Jay-Z is officially set to return to the stage as the headlining act for the upcoming The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. The annual fest announced Tuesday that the 56-year-old music icon and mogul will perform alongside the Roots at the Belmont Plateau on May 30.

The festival will take place on May 30 and May 31, with additional performers yet to be announced. Tickets are already on sale. News of Jay-Z’s performance at Roots Picnic comes as the rap icon continues to gear up for the 30th anniversary of the release of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, which was released in June 1996.

Last month, Hov made his 1996 single “Dead Presidents” available via digital service providers for the first time, also releasing pressed vinyl, cassette, and CD editions of the Ski-produced classic.

Another clue of Jay-Z’s potential celebration of Reasonable Doubt’s anniversary can be found on the flyer promoting his Roots Picnic set, which features Jay-Z’s name spelled with the umlaut used for the initial release of Reasonable Doubt (it was removed on later releases.)

Jay-Z last performed live in 2025 during the Cowboy Carter tour, where he took the stage with Beyoncé for a duet of their 2003 hit “Crazy in Love” during the final show of the tour’s Paris leg. He previously performed alongside Beyoncé at Global Citizen Festival 2018.

Jay-Z’s history with the Roots dates back to the Nineties: Hov enlisted the group as the backing band for his 2001 MTV Unplugged performance. Rumors have also circulated that Jay-Z might release new music to mark Reasonable Doubt’s anniversary; however, he has not confirmed or denied the speculation.

Britney Spears has entered rehab following her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence. The singer voluntarily checked into the treatment facility, a rep for the singer tells Rolling Stone.

The move comes just over a month after she was arrested on March 4 outside of Los Angeles County. A California Highway Patrol spokesperson told Rolling Stone at the time that officers suspected Spears was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. “Ms. Spears, showed signs of impairment and submitted to a series of field sobriety tests. Ms. Spears was subsequently arrested for a violation of California Vehicle Code section 23152(g), driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol, and booked into the Ventura County Main Jail.”

When RM is going through an existential crisis, which is pretty often, he might think of the words of Rainer Maria Rilke, or maybe the lyrics of Tyler, the Creator. Lying in his cold army bunk, scalp buzzed close, struggling with 18 unrelenting months of insomnia during mandatory military service, RM would listen to Don Toliver, to Playboi Carti, to Dijon’s debut, to Joji’s ballad “Past Won’t Leave My Bed.” When the lyrics got his brain humming with too many ideas for his own, he’d switch to streaming classical and ambient music. But he really latched onto Tyler’s “Darling, I,” and the chorus phrase “Forever is too long.” Tyler and Teezo Touchdown were singing about dodging monogamy at all costs, but RM teased out his own, deeper meaning. “Maybe at that time, the military felt too long for me,” RM says. “I just kept singing the phrase all the time. And I was being healed just by singing along to it.”
