‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Series Set About Elle Woods’ High School Years

It’s been over two decades since Reese Witherspoon first starred in Legally Blonde, changing her career and the landscape of film and TV in the early 2000s. Now, Witherspoon is executive producing a Legally Blonde prequel series at Amazon, titled Elle, which is something Witherspoon called a dream come true.

“I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series!” Witherspoon said in a statement, via the Hollywood Reporter. “Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that? I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine — along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell — for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!”

The news was announced on Tuesday at Amazon’s first-ever upfront presentation. Along with Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine production team, the series will be helmed by creator Kittrell, who has also worked on HBO’s Insecure and Amazon Freevee’s High School.

Elle will take viewers through the titular character’s high school years, showcasing her coming-of-age experiences and life as a teenager before fans met her as a sorority student turned Harvard Law School graduate.

The prequel has been in the works since early April but there isn’t an official release date for the series yet.

Oscars 2026: Best, Worst, and Most WTF Moments

To one degree or another, the Oscars are always somewhat of a slog. There’s simply no way to make a three-and-a-half-hour award show enjoyable from start to finish. But this year’s telecast was a bit more of a slog than usual thanks to scripted presenter bits that fell flat (reaching a nadir, arguably, with the evening’s final handout, which saw Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman singing famous songs about love?), tiresome speeches, and ongoing audio and production issues.

Still, the night wasn’t a total loss, because Conan O’Brien was once again brilliant in his second hosting tour of duty. He started the night on a high with an extended segment that poked fun at Weapons, and he kept the energy up with cheeky taped sketches — often poking fun at shortened attention spans (as in this bit with Sterling K. Brown that retooled Casablanca for those who might be watching while also starting at their phones), the scourge of AI, and the industry’s craven attempts to draw younger viewers — until the very last moment, when they inserted his smiling corpse into an incinerator, spoofing One Battle After Another. Along the way, the Academy finally honored a female cinematographer, Amy Madigan won an Oscar 40 years after her first nomination, and Timothée Chalamet had to paint a smile on his thinly mustachioed face when he lost in the lead acting category for a third time.

Kevin Spacey, the former star of House of Cards, took the witness stand at a California civil trial Tuesday and acknowledged he was formally diagnosed with “sexual compulsive behavior” in 2017 after he voluntarily entered an inpatient treatment program amid a wave of sexual misconduct allegations.

The diagnosis appeared in a psychiatric summary issued when Spacey was discharged from The Meadows treatment facility in Arizona on Dec. 16, 2017. In a Santa Monica courtroom, Spacey was asked to read part of the summary of his diagnosis aloud.
