David Byrne Turns Elon Musk’s Own Words Into New Song ‘Let Me Sell You a Dream'

"All his own words. No editorializing. Straight from the man’s mouth to mine," singer says of contribution to scathing 'Musk' documentary

David Byrne turns Elon Musk’s own words into a proto-punk song on “Let Me Sell You a Dream,” the Talking Heads singer’s contribution to the Alex Gibney-directed Musk documentary, out Friday.

Byrne teamed up with the film’s composer Daniel Pemberton for the track, which finds the singer arranging Musk’s proclamations from speeches and interviews into abstract lyricism. “Now I’m running human and imitation mode / I’m a chill normal dude / I just have to keep going,” Byrne sings. “Let me sell you a dream / Do you think I’m insane? / I eat a glass sandwich / I eat them every day.”

He adds on the bridge, “Multi-planet exploration / I’m a human emulation / I’m a total simulation.”

“A thrill to collaborate with Pemberton and get invited to do this as a fan of Gibney’s films,” Byrne said in a statement. “I asked for good quotes from the Martian, and found more of them online. I’m sure he loves dropping these wild statements, and those became the lyrics. All his own words. No editorializing. Straight from the man’s mouth to mine.”

“I was thrilled when David agreed to write (with our composer Daniel Pemberton) and perform the final song in the film,” Gibney added. “I am a huge fan of his. My wife and I were at the Pantages for the filming of Stop Making Sense, so I sensed that he would find a musical way into what the film is trying to say. And he did. ‘Let Me Sell You a Dream’ is kick-ass. And, in writing the lyrics, David dug deep into the sayings of Musk himself to get to ‘extremely hard core,’ foot-tapping sardonic poetry.”

As Variety notes, “Let Me Sell You a Dream” enters Byrne into a Best Original Song Oscars race that’s already fielding Taylor Swift’s “I Knew It, I Knew You.” However, Byrne already has an Academy Award in his possession, having won Best Original Score (with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cong Su) for The Last Emperor in 1988; the singer is an Emmy shy of an EGOT, as Seth Meyers mentioned while introducing Byrne to Late Night on Thursday:

Sean Combs Ordered to Pay Nearly $500,000 in Legal Fees Over Failed Defamation Lawsuit

Sean Combs has been ordered to pay nearly $500,000 in legal fees after losing his defamation lawsuit against NBCUniversal for its 2025 Peacock documentary, Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy.

A New York state judge ordered the Bad Boy founder to pay NBCUniversal’s high-paid lawyers $477,700 for bringing the unsuccessful suit, which was dismissed in April. (Combs filed an appeal.) Although Combs owes nearly half a million dollars, that is a significant reduction from the $990,000 legal bill the attorneys originally sought, according to court papers filed Tuesday.

The 2027 Grammys’ Best Pop Solo Performance Nominees Should Ring in New Artists

Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 16, “Rolling Stone” is breaking down 11 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.

The Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance was introduced 14 years ago, merging Best Female, Male, and Instrumental Pop Vocal Performance into one category. Among its biggest winners are vocal powerhouses Adele and Olivia Rodrigo, though the category is not without its surprises. Lola Young won for her quietly powerful performance of “Messy” in 2026, beating out nominees Lady Gaga and Sabrina Carpenter, while 2025 saw Miley Cyrus’ ubiquitous “Flowers” win the accolade. Best Pop Solo Performance can be a space where the Recording Academy recognizes — and perhaps awards — artists with songs that truly connect with the world, regardless of vocal chops.

Rush Interview: Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Anika Nilles on Reinventing the Band

Soon after Rush's debut Los Angeles dates for the Fifty Something, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and touring drummer Anika Nilles sat down with Rolling Stone for their most in-depth interviews yet on the band's miraculous return. (The band's new touring line-up in the wake of the 2020 death of drummer Neil Peart also includes keyboardist Loren Gold). Those interviews spawned a cover story in collaboration with Rolling Stone Canada — but there was even more from the conversations. Read Lee, Lifeson, and Nilles' joint interview below for the first time, or watch our new YouTube video..

Anika, I was reading that at some point you struggled with stage fright. I know that's probably something you had mostly overcome, but how does that play into the highest-pressure night of your life, night one of this tour?
Anika Nilles: I felt some pressure, but I was always focused on the music and get everything sorted, and I was trying to not let all the pressure come too much into my brain. But I also have some calming routines which I trained through the last six months, which were definitely helpful on the first night.

Jack White Slams Trump Over Comment That Iran ‘Take Out’ L.A., San Diego: ‘Worst American of All Time’

Following U.S. President Donald Trump‘s suggestion that Iran could “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego during a rally speech Monday night in Nebraska, musician Jack White posted a message for Trump supporters living in the regions.

“Hey republicans and conservatives that live in L.A. and San Diego; how do you feel about your Fuhrer recommending that the cities you live in get attacked?” White wrote in a social media post Tuesday. “Let me take a wild guess: it was a joke, owning the libs, insert cult rhetoric here, etc. The allegiance these people have to this corrupt felon is so laughable and ignorant.”

Will Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff to Retell Origin Story With ‘215’ Scripted Series

Apparently there’s a whole lot more to the “Fresh Prince” Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff‘s origin story than maxin’, relaxin’ all cool, and shootin’ some B-ball outside of the school. The duo are working together again now on a scripted series, 215, that will dramatize their struggle to break out of West Philadelphia to perform hip-hop on the world stage.

The show, of course, is set in West Philly in the late Eighties. “It follows a quick-witted teenage rapper, the DJ who is his musical other half, and the friends who helped fuel the dream,” the official synopsis says. “Together they chase a record deal, money and a way out as the city’s hip-hop scene takes off. Along the way they deal with label meetings, hometown loyalty, sudden fame and the friendships that hold them together, or almost don’t.”
