Michael Kiwanuka Explores the Playful Spirit That Inspired His Album ‘Fudge’ in New Short Film

During the spring and summer of 2023, Michael Kiwanuka decamped to a small, remote recording studio near his home in Southampton, England. The celebrated singer-songwriter, who’d won the prestigious Mercury Prize for 2019’s Kiwanuka, was about halfway done with his follow-up, 2024’s Small Changes, but was already starting to conceptualize the album that would come after that.

In a short documentary filmed at that time — and premiering today exclusively on Rolling Stone — Kiwanuka talks about this gestating project in terms of the fun, mindless doodles he’d draw at university, or while chatting with someone.

Jay-Z and J. Cole Back Lil Durk’s Latest Bid for Release: ‘Respectful and Focused’

Jay-Z and J. Cole are throwing their weight behind Lil Durk’s latest bid for release from federal custody.

The two hip-hop stars submitted letters to a federal judge Tuesday, urging Durk’s release on bond as the Grammy-winning rapper awaits an August 2027 trial in Los Angeles on racketeering-related charges. The charges were separated from his recent murder-for-hire trial, which ended with his acquittal on all counts.

How Melanie C Learned to Embrace Sporty Spice

How Melanie C Learned to Embrace Sporty Spice

Going into her North American tour this year, Melanie C was trying to have zero expectations. She would be performing in cities for the first time in more than two decades as a solo artist. Some of them were stops she last visited as a member of the Spice Girls during their 2007 reunion tour. Ticket sales were good, but what would happen when she actually set foot on those stages in front of throngs of people?

It turns out, the world is hungry for a star like Melanie. “I was blown away,” she tells Rolling Stone. “The responses everywhere were incredible, and people were singing all the new stuff, which, you know, for any artist is exactly what you want.”

Drake ‘Janice STFU’ Copyright Lawsuit is Withdrawn

Earlier this month, in a lawsuit filed in federal court, a producer and rapper from Oregon named Aviel Hirschfield claimed he was driving to Seattle last year in a friend’s borrowed Maybach when “I Follow Rivers,” the 2011 indie-pop classic by Swedish singer Lykke Li, started playing. It’d been a minute since he’d heard the song; Hirschfield said he was struck by how catchy its hook was. Hirschfield alleged that he then began writing a Lykke Li-inspired chorus that, less than six months later, would be featured, verbatim, on Drake’s global hit “Janice STFU.”

It would be a stunning story if proven to be true, but that lawsuit is dead for now, raising serious questions about the nature — and legitimacy — of Hirschfield’s claims. Barely 10 days after it was filed, the case has been voluntarily dismissed, according to a recent court filing.
