On May 13, NXNE offered a preview of its 30th anniversary celebrations with a spectacular programming launch party that set the tone for an edition focused on innovation, renewal, and creativity. Held at Toronto’s Illuminarium, the event gave an exclusive audience—made up of media, industry professionals, and VIP guests—a first look at Rolling Stone Presents: AMPLIFIED, the Immersive Rock Experience.

From the moment they entered the space, guests were immersed in a sensory world that pushed the limits of technology, with advanced 4K projection, 3D audio, haptic flooring, and an immersive environment spanning over 7,000 square feet. The show traces the history of rock while making it vibrate and move.

Conceived by Jodi Peckman (former Creative Director of Rolling Stone) and Joe Levy (former Editor-in-Chief of the magazine), the AMPLIFIED experience presents a thematic, non-linear narrative that explores backstage stories, studio sessions, political messages, fans, and much more. Narrated by Kevin Bacon and accompanied by a soundtrack featuring over 300 artists, the installation brings together more than 1,000 photos, 200 videos, and 1,300 Rolling Stone covers.

Highlights include the voice of Aretha Franklin, a rare Radiohead studio excerpt, the iconic hairstyles of Elvis and Justin Bieber, and a nod to Chappell Roan and her Pink Pony Club. The floor morphs into a garden, a studio carpet, or a club floor, while the walls pulse with images and music. The effect is complete—sensory and intergenerational.

After the screening, the evening continued in a festive atmosphere. Guests enjoyed gourmet bites by renowned local caterer Food Dudes and refined cocktails courtesy of Distillerie de Montréal, before being treated to an immersive DJ set by the enigmatic Sickick.

“For thirty years, NXNE has propelled talent to the international stage, fueled discovery, and created major cultural and economic impact. But its true strength lies in its commitment to equity, accessibility, and the belief that great talent can come from anywhere,” said Elizabeth Crisante, Chief Commercial Officer at AMG, the parent company of NXNE and Rolling Stone Québec. “Rolling Stone shares this mission. Since 1967, the publication has documented the evolution of music and society, giving a voice to movements, uncovering truth, and spotlighting the artists who shape our world. In Canada, we carry that legacy forward by creating new avenues for artists to be seen, heard, and celebrated.”

In addition to marking NXNE’s official launch, the event allowed key players in the music and media industries to connect and exchange ideas, paving the way for new collaborations. With AMPLIFIED as a starting point, the festival promises to go beyond traditional formats to reinvent our relationship with music.

Rolling Stone AMPLIFIED is on view at Illuminarium Toronto until the end of summer, before making its way to Montreal. For more information, visit the Illuminarium website.

Inside the Protests at Delaney Hall, the New Front in Trump’s Immigration War

For hours, the masked protesters and masked ICE agents have stood staring at each other, separated by a thin strip of asphalt. At the edges of the crowd, New Jersey state troopers stand around, arms crossed, looking bored. Daylight hours at Newark’s Delaney Hall immigration detention center are quieter, the crowds thinner, the officers behind the gates more relaxed. It’s when, until recently, families could still go in and out, visiting their relatives inside. But when night falls, things change.

“When sunset happens, they’re going to push us into that cage and mace the fuck out of us,” says a street medic we’ll call Egg. “When they come, they’ll come hard and fast.”

John Oliver Roasts Trump’s Freedom 250 Concert: ‘People You Haven’t Thought About Since 2009’

John Oliver recounted the disaster that Donald Trump‘s upcoming Freedom 250 concert series is quickly becoming on HBO‘s Last Week Tonight. The shows, intended to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, were announced with a lineup of artists like Bret Michaels, Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory, and Milli Vanilli.

“It is a stacked lineup of people that you haven’t thought about since 2009,” Oliver quipped. “Honestly, that sounds less like America’s 250th birthday and more like the playlist at Rhonda’s 50th. The only really surprising thing about that lineup is there aren’t special appearances from the ShamWow guy and the Gushers kid whose head turned into a raspberry.”

‘Euphoria’ Series Finale ‘Felt Like an Honest Ending,’ Says Creator Sam Levinson

Euphoria is officially over. The tumultuous drama series came to an end on HBO on Sunday night with the Season 3 finale, concluding with the death of Zendaya‘s character Rue from an accidental overdose.

In a behind-the-scenes segment that aired on HBO after the finale, creator Sam Levinson said, “It felt like an honest ending. The honest ending is people like Rue don’t make it. … I think in the end, I wanted to tell an honest story about addiction. I also wanted to tell a story about grief and the emotional turmoil that it can create.”

Jay-Z Disses Drake, Kanye West, and Nicki Minaj in Fiery Rap Freestyle at Roots Picnic

Jay-Z served as the headliner for Roots Picnic on Saturday in Philadelphia, and he surprised fans with a provocative freestyle right at the get-go. During his first headlining show in more than five years, he performed 32-songs over the course of 90 minutes and along with delivering his big hits, he also dropped disses on haters that include Drake, Kanye West, and Nicki Minaj.

Just minutes into his performance, he took his first apparent shot: Following 2002’s “Hovi Baby,” he dropped a four-minute freestyle. Performing a cappella, he seemingly went off on Drake, addressing his Iceman song “Janice STFU,” where Drake raps, “The jig is up.” On Saturday, Jay-Z clapped back: “The jig is up/We got up 10/wrong chart champ/You gotta look up again/N—-s look up to Hov/I never looked up to them.” He had more for Drake: “Them crackers got your publishing gangsta, go talk tough to them, don’t talk success to me,” he spit. “You n—-s is workers, in perpetuity is how your contract is worded/Don’t make me go further, man.”
