At the beginning of this month, Toronto rapper k-os announced he would be coming back with a full-length record, and shared the single “Guns & Roses”.
We now have further details about the project. Speaking to Billboard Canada, the veteran musician revealed that BLackneck, his first LP in over a decade, will be coming out next Friday, October 29, on Spiritual Tech Records.
The seven-track album was recorded in British-Columbia as well as on a farm in Ontario. He describes BLackneck as ''the best of everything'' from his career, and that it is in part inspired by a reflexion on what it means to be a Canadian artist.
Has previously revealed, the project was backed by the Boy himself. A longtime fan of k-os' work, Drake reportedly wanted a new album so bad he paid for it. Matt Babel, head of Drake's entertainment company DreamCrew, oversaw the project to completion, with k-os telling Billboard Canada he would sometimes show up to the studio ''with bags of cash''.
The album spans many genres, as proven with the Bob Rock-produced single ''I Would Never'', a powerful fuzz-rock tune he debuted earlier this year. He also mentions having called upon an orchestra for one of the songs on BLackneck.
One of the first Canadian rappers to hit the mainstream in the early 2000s, k-os has consistently been one of the most experimental musicians in his field. With songs like ''Crabuckit'' and ''Man I Used to Be'', he inspired a whole generation of people across the country who were discovering the genre, thanks in part to heavy rotation on MuchMusic and local airwaves, earning several Juno Awards along the way.
BLackneck comes out Friday, October 30.
