David Thornton, the actor and husband of Cyndi Lauper, is facing a civil suit in New York City tied to allegations of sexual assault against the couple’s son, Declyn Lauper.

The suit, obtained by Rolling Stone, was brought by an anonymous Jane Doe, who accused Declyn Lauper of a “brutal sexual assault” in November 2020. This appears to be the same Jane Doe who sued Lauper for sexual assault in 2024, as the alleged incidents described both complaints occurred on Nov. 9, 2020 at an apartment on Thompson Street in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. Jane Doe’s lawsuit against Lauper was set to head to mediation last year, but right before the hearing, Lauper filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

As for the new lawsuit, it accuses Thornton of “enabling the gender-motivated violence perpetrated against [Doe]” by Declyn Lauper. It argues that Thornton provided Lauper with the apartment where the alleged attack took place “without adequate supervision or restriction” and despite knowing about “his son’s prior sexual violence against women.”

A representative for Thornton did not immediately return Rolling Stone‘s request for comment, nor did the lawyer for Jane Doe.

According to the lawsuit, Doe said Declyn Lauper “invited” her to the apartment and sent her about $60 to cover her transit. Upon her arrival, the suit claims she and Lauper “disagreed about a sexual act” Declyn wanted Doe “to perform on him.” Doe then said she “insisted on leaving… because she did not feel comfortable.”

Declyn allegedly took Doe’s cell phone to keep her from leaving, then threatened to break it “if she did not perform fellatio on him.” He then allegedly “pushed Jane Doe onto his bed whenever she tried to exit his bedroom.” After pushing Doe onto the bed for a third time, Declyn allegedly held her down while Doe asked to be let up. Declyn allegedly refused, then “proceeded to forcibly smother his genitals over Jane Doe’s mouth, as Jane Doe warned him that she would bite him.”

Doe said she “gently placed her teeth on [Lauper’s] genitals in an attempt to get him off of her.” This allegedly prompted Lauper to put his bodyweight on Jane Doe’s head and neck, pressing her onto the bed. Lauper allegedly only released Doe when the two of them “heard a pop sound from her neck and upper spine.”

According to the suit, Lauper called Doe a “bitch” and the n-word, and “stated that no one would believe her if she ever repeated what had just transpired.” After leaving the apartment, Doe claimed that Lauper called her “saying that he was sorry for what he had just done to her.” He allegedly tried to contact her several more times, but Doe “refused to see him again.”

In trying to establish the case against Thornton, and his alleged awareness of his son’s alleged actions, Doe’s lawsuit notes that Lauper’s ex-girlfriend, Brittney Taylor (a contestant on Love & Hip-Hop: New York) publicly accused him in 2018 of domestic violence, physical assault, false imprisonment, and threats of revenge pornography. (It’s unclear if Lauper ever responded to these allegations; a lawyer for Lauper did not immediately return Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.)

The suit also notes Lauper’s two other run-ins with the law: a 2022 arrest for stealing a car outside a rapper’s memorial (he eventually pleaded guilty), and 2024 gun and drug charges connected to a shooting. He also pleaded guilty in that case and was sentenced to one year of interim probation and substance abuse treatment earlier this month.

Cardi B Wins $60,000 From Blogger Tasha K Over Offset and Stefon Diggs Posts

Gossip blogger Tasha K has agreed to pay Cardi B $60,000 after the Grammy-winning rapper went after the blogger for violating a previous legal ruling and disparaging her online.

The agreement, filed Tuesday and obtained by Rolling Stone, states that Cardi and Tasha K reached the resolution “to avoid the expense, delay and uncertainty of further litigation” over the total amount awarded. Their latest legal dispute stems from Cardi’s $4 million defamation victory in 2022 against the blogger, whose legal name is Latasha Kebe. Cardi agreed to delay efforts to collect the full judgment as long as Kebe refrained from denigrating Almánzar and her family.

T.I. and Tiny Awarded $0 in Punitive Damages at OMG Girlz Trial, Jury Rules

The fourth trial in a yearslong legal fight between T.I., Tameka “Tiny” Harris, and the toy giant MGA Entertainment did not go the celebrity couple’s way.

T.I. and Harris had sought to restore some of the $53.6 million in punitive damages that a judge in California had previously thrown out. But on Wednesday, the jury in the latest trial found that MGA had not acted with malice, meaning no punitive damages would be awarded. As a result, the couple’s total recovery remains capped at the $17.9 million in compensatory damages awarded by a different jury nearly two years ago.

The Best Movies of 2026 So Far

Welcome to the halfway point of 2026 — a year that’s already given us a good deal of high marks and low points, unexpected gems and genuine disappointments, bloated blockbusters and scrappy Gen-Z–auteur horror flicks, hot-and-heavy literary adaptations and revisionist-history biopics and whatever the hell you’d call Melania.

It’s been a weird six months at the movies, to be sure. Screenwriter extraordinaire William Goldman once famously quipped that when it comes to Hollywood predicting what will connect and what will flop, “nobody knows anything.” That seems to be the overall mantra for 2026. Cinematic universes that once felt they could mint money indefinitely now stumbled. Attempts to exploit nostalgia and brand-name I.P. were D.O.A. before they’d even begun. Remember when that highly hormonal take on Wuthering Heights, Charli XCX’s meta-fiction The Moment, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s musical-gangster mash-up The Bride, and the controversy-bating anti-romance The Drama were breathlessly anticipated to the point of hyperventilation? Most folks would be now be surprised to recall that they did indeed come out this year. Focus Features obviously figured they had a chance to make a splash with the indie-horror movie Obsession since they ponied up $20 million for it at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. They probably didn’t think, however, that they’d end up with what’s currently the eighth highest grossing movie of the year, ahead of a Star Wars spinoff, a DC superhero epic, and the latest Scream sequel.

Canada will join Eurovision

Canada will join Eurovision

Big news for local artists on Canada day, as the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced today that Canada will make its Eurovision debut in 2027, becoming the first new participating nation since Australia joined the competition in 2015. The move follows CBC/Radio-Canada's admission as a full EBU member, giving the public broadcaster the right to enter the contest. Canada will compete in the semi-finals, with details about its selection process expected later this year.

For decades, Canada has maintained an unusually close relationship with Eurovision despite being outside Europe. Canadian audiences have embraced the contest through streaming, social media, and the introduction of the "Rest of the World" vote, while one of Eurovision's most iconic winners, Céline Dion, claimed victory for Switzerland in 1988.
